Italy within the European context

An international comparison shows that in 2014 a markedly lower percentage of Italian household expenditure went on recreation and culture (6.6 percent, like Luxembourg) compared with the Eu28 average (8.6 percent).

Only four countries come immediately after Italy in the lower half of the European rankings, with values near or below 6 percent. At the opposite extreme, in a large group of countries (including the Northern countries, Malta and the United Kingdom), expenditure on recreation and culture exceeds or equals 10 percent.

With regard to the use of the web to access cultural content, Italy is among the eight countries below the Eu28 average for the number of readers of online newspapers and magazines, ranking last along with Ireland. Sweden remains the country with the highest incidence of people who surf the Internet for reading purposes.
